Orientation – 1 hr ($50/responsible skipper*)
This is a mandatory requirement for all first time renters at Nelson Sailing Center (NSC) regardless of your sailing background. Only the responsible skipper is required to perform the Orientation. It is recommended that he/she bring one-two crew members along to “learn the ropes”. The Orientation can be done on boats either at the dock (up to 25’ with electric engines) or out on moorings (up to 35’ with gasoline outboards or inboard diesel engines) but should be done on the type of boat you plan to rent most often. This is a one-time fee (unless there is a three years gap of renting at NSC). Rental boats on the dock require ASA 101 certification or similar sailing experience and rental boats on the moorings require ASA 103 certification or similar sailing experience. You will go out sailing with an instructor and review the following:
· NSC Rental rules
· Waterproof Safety Bag: flares, whistle, first-aid kit, VHF radio
· Radio Check
· Local Navigation Chart (& where not to run aground)
· Cleat Hitch knot
· Proper footwear (closed toe shoes with light colored soles)
· PFD requirements for children under 13 yrs old
· Safety Equipment on the boat: boat pole, fire extinguisher, anchor, type II life jackets, and type IV throwable
· Engine Operation (1 type per orientation)
o Electrical (boats on the dock)
o Gasoline (moored boats)
o Diesel (moored boats)
· Docking or Mooring (one or the other per orientation)
· Raising & Lowering the sails
· Sailing & Motoring the boat
· Procedures for dangerous weather conditions, any malfunction of the boat and running aground
Upgrade Orientation- ˝ hr ($25/responsible skipper*)
This is a mandatory requirement for all renters at Nelson Sailing Center (NSC) who have been through the 1-hour Orientation but would like to upgrade to a different type of boat system: docking, mooring or engine type. Only the responsible skipper is required to perform the Orientation. It is recommended that he/she bring one-two crew members along to “learn the ropes”. The Upgrade Orientation can be done on boats either at the dock (up to 25’ with electric engines) or out on moorings (up to 35’ with gasoline outboards or inboard diesel engines). This is a one-time fee (unless there is a three years gap of renting at NSC). Rental boats on the dock require ASA 101 certification or similar sailing experience and rental boats on the moorings require ASA 103 certification or similar sailing experience. You will go out on the boat with an instructor and review the following:
· Engine Operation (1 type per orientation)
o Electrical (boats on the dock)
o Gasoline (moored boats)
o Diesel (moored boats)
· Motoring the boat
· Docking or Mooring the boat
* The responsible skipper is the captain of the boat who is responsible for the safety of the crew and boat and MUST ALREADY KNOW HOW TO SAIL. If a crew member of that skipper would like to be certified to rent sailboats in the future at NSC, he/she is also required to perform the Orientation and therefore must pay the fee accordingly.
