The Battle of the Bays
Below: the "Battle of the Bays". The Log Canoes of the Chesapeake regularly race against the A Cats of Barnegat. The competition was in the Wannamaker section of Toms River.

Log Canoes are traditional Chesapeake craft. They have the unique feature of a movable plank which is positioned to windward so the crew can climb out to balance the boat.  Without this, the huge sail area and narrow beam would mean instant capsize.  As it is, they are a "handful" in a breeze and make for some of the most exciting sailing you can find.  Anyone with a camera and an appreciation for wooden boats will want to be on hand when the log canoes take to the water.

"Bear", the incredibly beautiful Sandbagger, participated in the competition, as well.  She was joined by "Bull", her twin.  These internationally admired recreations added an extra measure of excitement and grace to the racing.
The name comes from the unique feature of movable ballast in the form of sand bags.
