  LEARN TO SAIL

This course makes sailing easy and gets you out there fast!  You'll be sailing on your own in just 3 days.  Learn from the best instructors at the American Sailing Association's School of the Year on the Sailing Hall of Fame's 23' Pearson Ensign.  Each day you'll gain the skills and knowledge to confidently sail in familiar waters during average weather.  The first two days begin dockside with knot tying and safety instruction, then 6 hours on the water with a break for lunch.  Your third day is a solo practice sail (along with other beginners) that will prove your accomplishments.**  You will sail on your own, but you're not alone.  We are always standing by to assist you while you gain experience. 

Price: $439* per person.  Private 2-person course: $1079.  Put together your own group of 4: $1359.
Includes 18 hours of sailing, ASA Basic Keelboat Certification, exam and one year of ASA membership plus new member benefits***.

BASIC COASTAL CRUISING

This course opens up the world of cruising auxiliaries.  Learn from the best instructors at the ASA's Sailing School of the Year.  Your adventure begins with 3 days of training.  You will be handling boats up to 30' with a wheel and diesel engine.  The first 2 days will build on your skills in boat handling, seamaniship, docking, anchoring, reefing, weather, safety and navigation, with 6 hours each day spent underway.  Your third day is a solo practice sail that will hone your skills.**   You will sail on your own, but you're not alone.  We are always standing by to assist you while you gain experience.

This course also serves as a qualifier for renting the larger sailboats at Nelson's.

$399* per person.  Private 2-person course: $999.  Put together your own group of 4:$1200.

BAREBOAT CHARTERING CERTIFICATION

The next step up in coastal cruising certifications. This course is for sailors who wish to demonstrate ASA certified competence as skipper or crew of a  30 to 50 foot cruising sailboat under power and sail in coastal waters by day.

An advanced cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience.  The standard included knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures. Students will live aboard the boat during this two and one-half day course.  Normally, students must take the Basic Coastal Cruising course before this one  Course combination options available on request.  

$499 per person.  Private 2-person course: $1295.

BAREBOAT CHARTERING and CRUISING CATAMARAN COMBINATION

This unique combination course on the 38' luxury catamaran, Impulse, is your next step towards that dream cruise in the Caribbean aboard a bareboat catamaran.  This live aboard three & a half day course is intended for people with quite a bit of sailing experience and with ASA 101 & 103 courses under their belts.  The course covers all aspects of sailing a larger cruising catamaran in the 30 to 50 foot range, including boat handling under power and sail in coastal waters by day. Emphasis is placed on the differences from monohull sailing and includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.  Possible destinations include Atlantic City and New York.  Price includes ASA 104 & 114 certifications, 2 textbooks & 2 exams.  Provisioning and docking fees are not included and will be shared by students through coordination of your instructor. 4-6 Students.

COASTAL NAVIGATION CERTIFICATION

This shore-side course covers navigational theory for cruising in inland and coastal waters and leads to ASA Certification in Coastal Navigation.  Dead reckoning, determining position, running fixes, GPS navigation, and set and drift problems are among the topics taught.  Also intended to increase your familiarity with Barnegat Bay.  Price includes quality navigation tools and book.  Two day classroom course.

ADVANCED COASTAL CRUISING CERTIFICATION

Sailors with cruising experience can advance their skills and demonstrate the ability to act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length.  Emphasis is on day and night operation in inland and coastal waters in any weather.  Students must be skilled in navigation and must have attained the lower level certifications (or equivalent) to qualify for this course. This is a three and a half day course with possible destinations to Cape May and Sandy Hook.  Price includes ASA 106 certifications, textbook & exam.  Provisioning and docking fees are not included and will be shared by students through coordination of your instructor. 3-4 students

ADVANCED COASTAL CRUISING: 7 day Adventure on a 31’ Schooner

This seven-day live aboard course combines advanced coastal cruising skills with the thrill of sailing a 31’ Schooner modeled after the early 20th century Maine Friendship sloop “Dictator”. Sailors with cruising experience can advance their skills and demonstrate the ability to act as skipper and crew of a larger cruising sailboat 30 to 50 feet in length.  Emphasis is on day and night operation in inland and coastal waters in any weather. Students must be skilled in navigation and must have attained the lower level certifications (or equivalent) to qualify for this course.  Destination for this trip is Block Island, RI.  Price includes ASA 106 certifications, textbook & exam.  Provisioning and docking fees are not included and will be shared by students through coordination of your instructor.  3-4 Students

PRIVATE LESSONS

This service can be provided on your boat or ours.  Our instructors will custom tailor the instruction to suit your needs, or conduct ASA certified courses on a one to one basis.

SAFE BOATING

Certification course for New Jersey Safe Boating.  This is a one-day classroom course of six hours length (2 hrs home study required.   It covers all required subjects plus some additional areas of interest to all boaters.  Suitable for powerboaters, sailboaters or jetskiiers.  Passage of test at the end of the course leads to certification.  Taught by qualified and certified instructors -- US Coast Guard licensed captains.

BASIC OCEAN SAILING

A one-day (10-12 hr) course.  Gain practical ocean sailing experience on a larger boat (approx. 35').  Sail out of Barnegat Inlet and back in Manasquan Inlet (or reverse). You will transit five bridges, employ navigational skills, work with tides and currents.  Limit of six persons to a course.

$250 per person.   Please note: $125 non-refundable deposit required.

TRAILERABLE MULTIHULL SAILING
This course is intended for sailors who understand the fundamentals of sailing and want to step up to the excitement of performance sailing on a trailerable multihull. This hands on course will introduce you to the experience of performance sailing and at the same time build your skills and confidence in boat handling, seamanship, and safety unique to a multihull, including folding and trailering. .Certified sailors are able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary multihull sailboat of about 20-30 feet in length, in moderate wind and sea conditions.

CRUISING CATAMARAN SAILING

BASIC SPINNAKER HANDLING

This one-day course will teach the basic principles of flying a spinnaker.  Topics to be covered: packing, setting, flying, jibing, and dousing.  Three persons to a course, taught on a 23' Ensign or a 22' J22.

$250 per person.

 RUST REMOVAL CLINIC

Reacclimatize yourself with proper safety equipment, basic sailing maneuvers and local navigation charts (where not to run aground!).  Tune up your techniques on docking (Group 1) or mooring (Group 2) as well as anchoring to keep you and our boats safe this summer.  The clinic will start at 10am with 1 hour of classroom instruction and 2 hours of on-the-water instruction followed by group sailing to end at 5 pm. BBQ to follow for all participating students.   

$75/person (Group 1 – small boats off the dock)

DIESEL ENGINE 2-DAY WORKSHOP
 

Learn about your diesel engine and how to maintain it.  This course will familiarize the boat owner with proper methods of performing basic service and emergency repairs.  Topics include shop safety, identification of tools and equipment, fasteners and their use, history of diesel and fuel. operating principles, lubrication systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, and propulsion systems -- and covers all engine models (i.e. Universal, Yanmar, Nanny, Westerbeke).  Taught by an ASE certified diesel engine mechanic with over 35 years of experience.

$300 per person.

 GIRL SCOUT SMOOTH SAILING INTEREST  PROJECT

Each 2-day course will be sailed in a fixed keel 23’ Ensign sloop.  The first day we will learn basic sailing maneuvers using just the mainsail.  The second day we will expand their skills and sail with full sails to all points of the compass.  Each group will consist of one instructor and four to six Girl Scouts.  Everyone will get a chance to sail as a crewmember and as a skipper.  Each two-day session contains on-the-water and safety elements for the project.  All instructors are US Coast Guard certified Captains and are certified in CPR and First Aid.  They are also all certified by the American Sailing Association to teach recreational sailing worldwide.  In addition they are qualified in safe swim defense techniques.

$720 per boat of 4-6 scouts.

 

Requirements:

1) Contact the Nelson Sailing Center early to reserve a boat for your group (4-6 Girl Scouts).

2) Read the requirements and review the contents located in the Interest Project Book.

3) Attend both days of on the water activities and bring lunch.

BOY SCOUT   MERIT BADGE

Presented by the staff of the Nelson Sailing Center.  Sessions will be held between July 10 and August 29, 2006.  There are fifteen sessions, each two days in duration.  We will sail both days.  The first day we will learn basic sailing maneuvers on a fixed keel 23’ Ensign sloop.  BE PREPARED: on the second day we will get wet (see pages 71-75 in the pamphlet). Each group will consist of one instructor and four to six scouts.  Everyone will get a chance to sail as a crewmember and as a skipper. Each two-day session contains all the elements for the merit badge.   All instructors are US Coast Guard certified Captains and are certified in CPR and First Aid.  They are also certified by the American Sailing Association to teach recreational sailing worldwide.  In addition, they are qualified in the BSA Safe Swim Defense, the BSA Youth Protection Training Program, and are registered BSA merit badge counselors.

$720 per boat of 4-6 scouts.

 

Requirements:
